Stay Active Over the Long Weekend

It’s Labor Day Weekend and that means a number of people have three days off in a row. Weekends can be an excuse to get out of our routine, especially if we are attending picnics and parties. This weekend is supposed to be gorgeous. The fall-like weather we’ve been having is expected to continue. I know the weatherman isn’t always right, but let’s assume he’s going to be.

This weekend try to make an effort to do two things outdoors within the three days. Not only will the activity be good for you body, but think of it as enjoying the last few days of summer. You could do yard work and it would be physical, but that isn’t necessarily fun. Instead, take a walk, a run, or a bike ride. Go somewhere and rent a kayak or a canoe if you’ve never done that before. Play volley ball at the Labor Day picnic. Take a hike.

Find something that energizes you and try and make time for it. After all, it is your holiday weekend. Best to fill it with activities you enjoy that […]

Office Pilates-Let’s Twist Again

Whether you’ve been sitting or standing all day, when you read this, especially if the afternoon has brought on that moment when you feel like you could fall asleep in front of the computer, try a little twisting.

Stand up or stay up and rotate from side to side at your torso. Then let the move get bigger, let your torso and hips move. Try balancing on one leg (near a wall if you need some support) and turn the lifted leg from side to side. Then switch and rotate the other leg. Get all you muscles moving in opposite directions. Get a little twist all over your body.

Moving the body will almost always help wake it up. After a little twisting (5 minutes or less) you should feel revitalized to get through the afternoon. If it’s one of those days where an hour later your eyelids are starting to droop again, get back up and twist. Twist as often as you need to, even if it’s every hour. Not only should it wake you up, but it pulls you body out of the position it’s been stuck in […]

Run for the Fallen: Thank You

I wanted to thank everyone who participated in Connecticut’s Run for the Fallen on Sunday. We really appreciate your attendance. We had a group of about 25 people. There were families who had lost children in Iraq and a woman who traveled from Boston to come to the event. The Silk City Striders also brought snacks over from their run earlier in the day. It was a wonderful way to honor the men and women who have lost their lives.

We were on Fox 61 News at 10 o’clock Sunday night. They did a nice highlight of Run for the Fallen and what we were doing in Connecticut.

This is a photo of most of our group, although we had a couple late arrivals and our camera man. Ball Pilates vs. Mat Pilates

I am going to make the assumption that if you’re reading this you have taken some of our mat classes and are reasonably familiar with how they work. If not, a mat class is a good place to start practicing Pilates. You’ll learn all the basics (and Pilates has a lot of basics) without having to worry about anything but your body.

Pilates is so versatile that you can continue with mat classes forever. There are always new exercises to learn and different versions of old exercises. Adding the ball can bring a fun new twist. Simply sitting on an exercise ball requires core muscles to engage automatically. They must in order to help you balance. So right there your muscles are challenged.

As with any prop the ball can make exercises harder or easier. It provides you with different options. Plus, if you haven’t worked with a ball before, you’ll be engaging your muscles in a new way. Some ball exercises simulate exercises on the Pilates machines. If you’ve ever seen the machines, they are fabulous tools that look […]
