Talk to Your Instructor

Believe it or not, instructors can’t read minds. We wish we could, but as far as I know there is no certification in mind reading yet. That being said, it is important for you to give your instructor feedback. At Personal Euphoria, I know that our instructors like to know your feelings about the class. Here are just some of the topics it is important to bring up with your instructor.

  • Any exercises you don’t understand
  • Any pain you experience
  • Whether you like tactile confirmation during exercises (Does it help you learn the exercise when an instructor touches your shoulders or back or does it make you uncomfortable?)
  • Whether the class feels too easy or too hard
  • If you know you’ll miss a class or be late or need to leave early

Talking with your instructor will help you get a better class experience and that is what everybody wants. It’s also important to feel comfortable enough to ask any question you have on your mind. Nothing should feel too stupid or embarrassing.

If an instructor doesn’t know the answer she/he can look it up and get back to you. If it’s on nutrition or […]

Growing Old

On my recent trip to China, Matt and I were younger than the majority of the people by 30 years. Everyone kept asking us how we felt about being the youngest people on the trip. Neither of us were bothered. We have a number of older friends and I don’t judge people by their age. However, I can be impressed by people based on their age.

In one of the groups on our tour there was a 90-year-old man. He was full of life and had made the 14-plus hour plane ride to China. He was fully enjoying himself. I hope that I have as much energy and vitality when I am his age (which I fully hope to be some day).

In my group there was an older lady. I never asked her age. She kept up with all of us and said that it’s all about mindset. She has obviously made healthful choices about life and clearly has some decent genes, but I think mindset is very important.

What I saw in […]

What Do You Love?

Exercise is just one part of being healthy. It’s also important to make sure you fill life with things you love (and a little adventure, I think). So consider things you love to do and see if you can’t fit them into your schedule in the near future.

I love to travel.
I love the movies.
I love to walk.
I love to write.
I love spending time with my family.
I love waking up refreshed.
I love soaking in the sun.

My list could go on and on. When I see how many things on my list are free and easy to enjoy, I feel very lucky.

Can Movies Motivate You?

Sometimes you’ll see a good movie or a scene from a movie that will inspire you. Rocky running up the stairs in Philly comes to mind. For me Goonies is a big one. It reminds me to make the most of my time and appreciate youth. What movie motivates you? It can motivate you for health reasons, goals and dreams, or just make you feel good about life. Maybe it’s time for some movie magic this week. Watch your favorite movie and let yourself be re-inspired.

Awkward Breathing in Pilates

Many people, especially when they first start Pilates, find the breathing challenging and awkward. It takes a lot of practice to get it right. The important thing to remember is just breath. In time, it will come. I think of the quote, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.” If that is true then exercise and Pilates (since we so often catch ourselves holding our breath) must be good for us! 🙂

Remember, it is all about perspective. Relax and know that the breathing will get better and easier, and it will. Try and force it and you might slow your progress down.
