Memorial Day Tips

Picnics and parties may pop up on your list of things to do this weekend. It can often be hard to stay on track when there are so many goodies around. Don’t make yourself feel guilty about a day off, instead be a little more active. Try any of these suggestions, or come up with something you prefer. Maybe you can do them all. Hey, it is a long weekend after all.

  • Get family and friends to go for a walk at the picnic
  • Play volleyball or another sport that is being played at the picnic
  • Go for a walk at your town center or town green
  • Try a new activity–kayaking or swimming or ultimate Frisbee or…..
  • Do 20-minutes of Pilates on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday
  • Take a hike
  • Bring a couple jump ropes or hula hoops to the party (anything you used to play with as a kid) and try and get people to use them with you
  • If you’re throwing the party, plan a relay race and race in it

Healthy Treats for a Memorial Day Picnic

If you want to make sure there are healthy foods at a picnic you’re attending, be sure to bring some.

  • Make a green salad
  • Bring fruit or veggies
  • Bring your own bottle of water–or bottles to share
  • Bring a platter of meat and cheese rolls–it will save you on carbs if you’d rather have dessert
  • Bring vegetable kabobs

Feel Like Munching?–Use Distraction

If you’re in the mood to munch, but feel low on energy (which means you have no intention of going for a walk) consider logging onto the computer and playing a word game, or puzzle, or card game. There are a lot of free ones out there. If you’re on Facebook, you can find a lot of games (called applications). Sometimes you can even play with friends.

Try sipping some water while you play and see if that stops the craving. If not, hopefully, by the time you’re done playing, you’ll have to be on to another activity and you won’t have time to munch.
