Giant Pumpkin

So I planted five giant pumpkin seeds with the thought that if I planted five one might survive. I assumed one would never sprout, one would die when I moved them outside, one would get eaten by something, one would do something unexpected and we’d wind up with one really large pumpkin.

I planted the seeds with a bunch of other wildflowers and sunflowers. A day later everything else had sprouted. A week later everything was at least an inch tall. I was bummed–none of the pumpkins seemed to make it.

And then yesterday, two pumpkins sprouted. And today all five have sprouted and one is an inch tall. It’s growing so fast. So so far, I haven’t lost any in the sprouting season. I’ve realized I’m not sure what to do if all five pumpkins survive and I have five giant pumpkins. I guess like life this story is to be continued. For now, I’ll just be excited about my little sprouts and not worry about the future.

Type A

I think it’s safe to say that I am a Type-A personality. I’m competitive, driven, a perfectionist, I’m often in a rush, hate wasting time, and constantly in motion. As with anything there is a good and bad that comes with this (very generalized) category that I have clumped myself in.

We will literally muscle through everything, but that doesn’t help our body get stronger.

We’ll work through an injury, frustrated with ourselves that we are hindered, when the best thing we can do for ourselves is take a break or adjust so that we can slowly rebuild strength without injuring ourselves more.

I know it can be hard, but sometime to be the best you can be you’ve got to rein yourself in a little. Simon and Garfunkel got it right: “Slow down you move to fast. You’ve got to make the morning last.” Instead of the […]

New Year Challenge: Be Kind To Yourself

I catch myself on a regular basis saying something like, “Maggie, you dolt” or “Ugh, Maggie, what were you thinking.” (Yes, I talk to myself.) I think we all sometimes subtly, sometimes more obviously put ourselves down. Sometimes with the way we look at ourselves or the way we think about ourselves.

This year, catch yourself when you’re thinking negative thoughts about you. Try to stop and exchange the bad thought with a good one.
