What’s Really Important?

On New Year’s day a group of girlfriends came over. One of them mentioned that she wanted to start going to the gym this year, not because she wanted to lose weight, but because she wanted to feel better and she hadn’t been exercising.

I thought that was a really important reminder. Feeling good should be the reason why we take care of ourselves. A weight reduction should be a pleasant side effect, but so often it is the other way around. Since I’ve set a goal to be 130 pounds, I realize there is a level to which the weight is occupying my mind more than whether or not I feel good.

Every Monday morning when I weigh myself, even on weeks when I feel really good, I’m hoping for a particular number. If I ate really well and exercised daily, but my weight went up, because, let’s face it, we can fluctuate a few pounds from one hour to the next just by going to the bathroom, I’d be disappointed. My first thought probably wouldn’t […]

Wednesday Challenge: Maggie’s Goals

In 2011 I’m going to be 30! It’s not old, but it’s a whole new decade, and I’m excited about it. I’m not having a hard time; I still feel young (most of the time), and the only thing I’m going to miss is hearing how young people think I am. Now, when people ask my age and I respond with “20-anything,” they always say, “Oh, you’re so young.” I think I may hear that a little less.

I was trying to decide what I wanted to do to celebrate being thirty, and I decided I wanted to challenge myself. My goal is to be in the best shape of my life this year. Matt thinks this is going to be a challenge since I was pretty fit in my youth, but I’m going to try. I haven’t worked everything out. For example, I’m not sure what I’m going to base the status of my shape on–weight, BMI, etc.

I would say that I was in the best shape of my life between eighteen and twenty. But at […]

How Time Flies

Time certainly goes by quickly. Last week Matt and I were just talking about how this time last year we were hiking the Inca Trail in Peru. The altitude made us feel sick as dogs, but we had a wonderful trip anyway.

It’s funny the little tricks time can play on you. A couple of years ago Matt and I went to Tennessee. That feels like it could have been yesterday, but our trip to Peru feels like it was an eternity ago–not just last year.

No matter what perspective we have on how time passes, everyone seems to agree it moves faster and faster every year. So take a little advantage of your time. This weekend make sure you have time for a little fun, or adventure, or something that really makes you feel like you are thoroughly enjoying your time.

Inspired

The weekend of September 11th my family and I hosted my Grandfather’s WWII ship’s reunion. These men and their wives have been meeting since the fifties once a year. It’s become a small group, but an inspirational group. Almost everyone of them is in their late eighties or early nineties and they are active and living life.

Alice, who helped start the reunions, told me you have to plan on being here next year. Then she said, “Look at me. I just had my hip replaced and I’m here. Sometimes working through a little pain is good for you.”

While I don’t want to advocate anyone working through pain, it is her attitude that makes her life so rich. And every year when I see these people, I’m reminded why they are referred to as The Greatest Generation. I admire them all and I love listening to their stories.

Officially Retired

My mom is officially retired. I say officially because she spent the past 30+ years teaching English (mostly to eighth graders in Griswold, Connecticut). It’s being a teacher that makes it hard to determine her “official” retirement date.

First she was officially retired at the end of last school year, but since she typically has the summer off from school that didn’t really count or feel any different. Then there was the official retirement when her former colleagues had to start meeting informally again for the school year. Then her former colleagues went back to work and then the students returned from summer vacation. That is the day my mom sat outside in the driveway in a lawn chair with a sign that said: “Just Retired.” I cannot think of another official date that may come up that will finalize her retirement more that the kids going back to school.

So now it is just time to enjoy. To my mom (and anyone else who has happened to retire recently). Do enjoy it. Life is short; you’ve […]
