Vegan Update

The results are going to have to wait until my blogs next week because while the blood has been drawn and the experiment is officially over, I’m not going to get my results and meet with my doctor until this week. So until then, just enjoy this picture of a vegan pulled pork sandwich—a meal that I no longer have to eat.

Going Nuts for Nuts

If I never see another nut again as long as I live I will be happy. I honestly thought I would feel better on the vegan diet. I thought I’d feel lighter. When I was a vegetarian for five years I remember that I never felt as heavy after a meal. I wasn’t actually lighter, but it was just an anecdotal feeling.

Week two felt better overall either because I started getting used to the diet or because I added some fake, processed foods my body is used to, but week one where I ate a lot of soaked and pureed nuts I was a bloated, gassy mess and felt awful the whole week.

Adding a lot of vegetables didn’t make my digestive track happy either. I know veggies are supposed to be great for you, and I believe that, but they can be hard to digest. I often feel like my insides would prefer carbs (usually in the form of pasta, bread, or cereal). Maybe my insides are just lazy and they know digesting carbs will be easier for them than digesting fresh veggies, especially raw veggies.

I’m sure my anti-nut phase will pass because I […]

Being Vegan When You’re Not A Vegan

I assume that most vegans are vegan for a personal, political, health, or moral choice. I’m simply vegan as an experiment for a very short time. It makes a difference and this difference makes me feel a little fake every time I go to the grocery store. Now that I’m thinking so much about my food, I realized how much what we put on that conveyor belt at the grocery store says about us. You can tell quite a bit about someone based on their food choices. For example, I suspect all the cashiers I’ve had for two weeks assume I’m actually a vegan.

But I’m not. I feel like I’m being a little deceptive or at least like I’m not being me. I know I’m over thinking it, but hey, lately, all I’m thinking about is food! It’s on my mind a lot.

Food & A Good Workout

What I put in my body really makes a difference. I see it all the time, especially with taking this interval training class where we run sprints and jump rope. I always feel like the workout on Thursday morning is more challenging for me than Tuesday’s class. It could be that it comes later in the week, but I think it’s more the fact that I typically eat pizza the night before since we have some people over to watch Survivor. Pizza is delicious, but it’s also salty, cheesy, greasy and generally fatty.

I notice a difference when I run too.
While I guess it may seem like a bit of a pain, I’m glad that I can tell that what I eat affects me. We’ll see if it helps me change my food choices, but it’s certainly good to be aware.
