Life: The Constant Curve Ball

In my year of getting into the best shape of my life, I’ve noticed something. There is always an excuse—a birthday party, Thanksgiving, a super bowl game as to why I should have the day off from being healthy. I could come up with constant excuses. But the truth is that’s life. Life will always throw me a curve ball that will make it harder to be healthy.

Instead of taking the day off, I really need to find a way to make healthier decisions on days that are tough because those tough days are never going away. I need to learn to live with them. Since I was blessed with a large family I could probably have an excuse a week if you count birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Heck I celebrate my own birthday five different times each year. That’s five excuses in one month. […]

Challenge Update Food

I’m not sure that I dealt with food enough this year in my challenge to get in the best shape of my life. I planned all these challenges, but thought little about what I would eat. And to some degree, while I was in the midst of a challenge it really didn’t matter. Well, I was burning calories, which was good, but what I put in my body is still important.

My problem is, I LOVE TO EAT. And I’m not good at curbing that. Lately, even though my exercise output has been less my food output hasn’t changed. And all I seem to want is saltly and sweat stuff. Give me guacamole with chips or chocolate and I’m a happy girl. Those seem to be my three favorite foods of late.

I’ve been trying to eat well Monday through Friday afternoon. Eating well for me means no desserts or sweets (other than fruit), trying not to overeat, a salad for one meal a day, reasonably healthy foods (not Chinese food or super greasy pizza, although I do make […]

Better Run, Better Run: Food for A Better Run

I am not a dietician, but I’m interested in food and nutrition and how food affects our ability to move and feel good. So my first half marathon this year, as is suggested by many people, I laid off salty, greasy, cheesy food and had carbs and protein for lunch the day before and a light dinner the night before. I ate half a bagel with peanut better the morning of the race because I knew I wouldn’t be able to wait until 9:30 to eat breakfast. By mile ten my gut was pretty unhappy with me.

A couple weeks later I met some runners for a 12-mile practice run. The day before I’d eaten almost everything the Big-E has to offer including a bacon-cheese-burger on a donut. I thought I was in it for it, but I felt fine.

The night before my most recent half marathon, I’d planned to eat a light dinner, but I didn’t get home from work until 8pm I was starving and had called home to ask Matt to have pizza waiting […]

I Ate at the BIG E!

Today, I think a picture really is worth a thousand words. Here is a picture of everything I ate, even if I only had a bite or two. Thank God I had friends who were willing to share everything with me or I don’t think I would have made it through the day!

Baked Potato–Nothing special

Swiss Pancake–YUM!

Fried Oreo–Yuck

Bacon Cheeseburger on a Donut–Amazingly Delicious

Fried Butter–Nothing Special

At The Big E

It better not be raining today because I’m supposed to be at the Big E for the first time in my life. I have every intention of eating myself through The Big E. I think it will cost an arm and a leg, but I want to taste a bite of everything.

Fried Kool-Aid—what’s the point? I don’t know, but I’m fascinated to know what it’s all about. On one level the food that is offered at The Big E seems like the epitome of what is wrong with America and yet I can’t draw myself away. I’m fascinated, and I want to know what it all tastes like. I wonder if I actually only eat one bite of everything just how much I will have consumed by the end of the day.

It’s a good thing I have a 12-mile training run planned for tomorrow. On second thought, maybe that’s not such a good thing.
