Recipe–Honey Dew Melon Soup

Here’s a recipe I told some people who attend my classes that I would post. I was given it by Jane and Phil Mackay from the Blue Heron Bed and Breakfast in PEI. They served it as part of breakfast and I’ve been serving it for dessert.

Blend the following:

A cut honeydew melon (skin and seed removed)–can also use cantaloupe
1/2 C Vanilla Yogurt
1/2 C Orange Juice
1 tsp Honey

Serve immediately or chill. Enjoy the deliciousness.

(The Blue Heron is a great place to stay, by the way, if you are ever in PEI.)

Eat Fresh

This is a wonderful time of year when you can consume local foods that are fresh. You can even meet the farmers who grew the food when you visit a local farmers market. Farmer’s markets are a growing sensation.

As I drive around town from class to class, I’ve noticed signs advertising some new ones. When we support our farmers, they’ll come back and bring more farmers and more choices. It’s a win win.

Great Salads

Salads can be deceptive. Some make the argument that by the time you’ve piled on all the cheese, dressing, and meats you might have well gone for a burger. I think even though you can make a salad high in calories, depending on what you put in it, you are getting more variety in your foods and adding lots of veggies. So here are some of my favorite salads to get at local restaurants. I can’t speak for the number of calories or if they are the healthiest meal you can eat, but I sure to enjoy the way they taste.

Alchemy Juice Bar (Hartford): They have good salads, but you must have a salad accompanied by a smoothy. That is what they are great at!

Joey Garlics (Farmington & Newington): Their portions are huge, but their Goat Cheese Salad is regular-sized and delicious!

Tisane (Hartford): I suspect all their salads are good. I’ve never had a bad meal there, but I really like their steak salad–I think it’s a new addition to the menu. Yummy.

Fuyu Persimmons

What looks more like an heirloom tomato tastes more like a carrot. It would be better if it tasted more like an heirloom tomato. This was a disappointment. I was able to pick it up at a local grocery store so it wasn’t as hard to find as a mangosteen. The texture looked like it would feel like a pear or an apple, but in addition to tasting like a carrot, it had the texture of a carrot. Overall, it was pretty bland and not nearly as fun to try as the sweet and messy purple mangosteen–a favorite of all my exotic fruits so far.
