Eating In Italy

Half the fun of vacation is eating the food, and since my recent trips have been to countries where you have to be careful what you eat and you need to sterilize the water, I was thrilled to be going to Italy.
I’ll admit that I ate gelato every day, sometimes twice a day, sometimes wrapped in a crepe. Matt was attempting to eat pizza everyday and I tried to help him achieve this goal for perhaps four or five days in a row. Portions are smaller, the food is fresher, and nutella is treated like a God. Truffles are delicious.

The food is an important part of meals, for sure, but […]

National Egg Day

June 3rd is National Egg Day. Well, maybe. Believe it or not there is some debate about when exactly National Egg Day is, but it seems people are willing to agree June 3rd is a good enough date.

While eggs are high in cholesterol they are a great source of protein. So try and have a healthy egg today. Scrambled or poached is better than fried. Or perhaps a quiche as a side for dinner. Add veggies like spinach or broccoli to the quiche and it gets a little healthier.

My mom makes the best scrambled eggs. She cooks them slow so they don’t burn and for a while so they aren’t wet. And I believe her secret ingredient (in addition to the usual milk, garlic power and pepper) is parmesan cheese. In my family scrambled eggs are one of those things nobody can make like mom.

I, for one, am a fan of the incredible, edible egg.

Vinegar

Young Consumers Lead Surge In Specialty Foods Purchases

I’ve always been a fan of vinegar. I like the taste and as you may or may not know I wash my hair with baking soda and sometimes add cider vinegar. My sister is convinced that when you’re getting sick if you drink a teaspoon of cider vinegar you can ward off whatever is about to ail you. I’d buy that medicine.

Now researchers in Japan have concluded that 3 teaspoons a day of vinegar can help reduce body fat accumulation and reduce body weight. It’s like the miracle drink. It’s not going to hurt you, so why not ditch the creamy dressings and go with a little EVOO and a good vinegar.

Week of Pictures Review

So I took pictures of my food for a whole week and what did I learn:

1) My food is very repetitive
2) I really like foods that are brown and beige
3) You wouldn’t think it but it takes a lot of time to take a picture of everything you eat
4) Taking pictures of your food makes you think about everything you put in your mouth

There is a bit of reality here. I am very busy, and I enjoy life that way. I would love to have the time to cook full, well-balanced meals, but I just don’t have that time every day. (I hope to have that kind of time when I retire.) Still I try to eat reasonably healthy foods. I get in phases where I eat something often. For example I’ll go through a frozen burrito phase or a goat cheese salad phase. Eventually they will shift to a Caesar salad and a pasta phase. It’s easy and doesn’t take much thought for me to plan what I’ll be eating with some idea of the number of calories I’m consuming.

Where I try […]

Last Day of Pictures

The final day of taking pictures of my food! Today we celebrated my birthday at my Mom’s and I requested my usual meal that we have once a year. Most people refer to it as fried dough, but my Italian family refers to it as pizelles (to most Italians pizelles are cookies). My mom makes the best fried dough and once I year I devour it as if I haven’t eaten in centuries.

Workout: Walk 4 miles in 1 hour, 30-minute Pilates

Breakfast: Two poached eggs on 1 piece toast
Lunch: Left over chicken and asparagus
Appetizer: Bean dip on Triscuits
Dinner: SIX fried dough, some with sauce and cheese, some with granulated sugar
Dessert: Cherry Nut Cake with homemade dark chocolate ice cream
Drink: Cherry Soda (all natural)

Don’t think I passed on anything I desired today. My fried dough record is seven, but I couldn’t make it happen. By the end of the night I was so stuffed I didn’t think I’d ever need to feed myself again.
