No Dessert, But…Peanut Butter

Well, my healthy lifestyle isn’t going as well as to be expected. I haven’t eaten dessert yet, but I seem to be hungry for just about everything else, especially peanut butter. I think I’ve eaten a jar in two weeks. That’s 3,200 calories–about 230 calories per day. I guess that’s not as bad as it seems, although that’s pretty much one pound. If I cut out peanut butter and didn’t replace it with anything I would be a pound lighter right now.

I did a search online to see what a peanut butter craving could mean, and the internet proved to be completely useless. Apparently, I could have anything from a Vitamin A deficiency to a mold allergy, which seems really far-fetched. I could even crave peanut butter because I’m allergic to it. It turns out that eating too much of something can make you addicted and you can have feelings of withdrawal without it.

This why I can never go on websites like WebMD. I think it’s more likely, that the most common Google response is […]

Is Food A Treat?

I guess what I really want to ask is SHOULD food be a treat? Since I’ve been trying to get in the best shape of my life, I’ve noticed that I will think thoughts like, I just shoveled the driveway now I deserve some hot chocolate, or It’s been a busy week, I deserve some dark chocolate, or, I didn’t workout today so I don’t deserve dessert.

I’m struck by the word “deserve” as opposed to want, crave, need, etc. And while I’m sure I’ve spent a lifetime thinking this, I never really noticed or thought about it. On the surface it seems like a bad way to think about food, but is it? Am I the only one who thinks this way? And after shoveling the driveway, don’t I deserve some hot chocolate?

Healthy Lifestyle Slow Going

My healthy lifestyle has been progressing slowly. I’m the same weight and same measurements–135 pounds. And at this point I’ve got less than two months before I’m 30. I think I have to make February no dessert month or something.

The problem is, that isn’t realistic. I’m not going to cut desserts out forever. However, I really would like to lose five pounds because I think my four physical challenges that I’m preparing for this year will be easier if I do. And I think my knees will thank me a little bit, especially when I run and hike. And, I think I’ll just feel better in my own skin.

Alright–that’s it. I’ve decide this very second:no dessert for Maggie in the month of February. It’s the shortest month of the year, so I should be able to do it. Anyone want to join me? When we feel like having chocolate cake we can convince each other that plain yogurt is just as good.

My only exception: if we get more good snow storms and I shovel or sled, afterward I […]

Pasta! Pasta! Pasta!

If it were up to my taste buds I would each pasta for every meal of every day, occasionally swapping out breakfast for a waffle, cereal, toast, or oatmeal. I love the stuff. And frequently when I was in high school and college I would eat pasta for a least one meal a day. It must be the Italian genes because while I like corned beef and cabbage, I seem just fine with an annual fix of the stuff.

But back to pasta. Are you sensing a carb theme here? That’s really what it is–pasta is my favorite carb–but I love all carbs. Right now I can’t think of a carbohydrate that I don’t like. I believe my dad once told me that he didn’t feel satisfied from a meal lacking in meat. Well I don’t feel satisfied from a meal lacking in carbs. And while carbs have gotten a bad wrap lately, in moderation they aren’t worse than anything else.

But moderation has always been my problem, until recently. Carbs are still what I want, but […]

Ratatouille

I made my first ratatouille this week. As far as I could tell if, when you are buying all the ingredients, if you don’t purchase a bouquet garni because you don’t know what it is than ratatouille is basically sautéed vegetables—not the end of the world, but really nothing special.
Although such a colorful array of veggies, seems like it has to be good, especially during the winter.
When I realized I was lacking what turned out the be the most important ingredient, I looked online and found that it’s really just a bundle of spices you cook the veggies with and then remove at the end. So I just added Wikipedia’s recommended spices for a bouquet garni and never removed them. My spices weren’t fresh, but I figured it was better than nothing.

My cookbook had a photograph of the veggies still looking quite firm at the end, but called for them to simmer for 50-plus minutes. I don’t know how you cook anything that long and not have it turn to mush, which my veggies […]
